OPP very busy over the weekend
(Collingwood/The Blue Mountains, ON.) The
Collingwood and The Blue Mountains detachment of the Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to almost 300 calls for
service over the course of the last three days, over double the usual
amount of calls on a typical weekend.
Police dealt with 31
calls for service regarding liquor license act violations where
numerous individuals were arrested, charged and many were kept
overnight until sober. Cells at the Collingwood detachment were filled
to capacity many times during the weekend, especially during
nightshifts. Many charges were laid for open liquor and being
intoxicated in a public place. 23 calls for
mischief were attended to, many for broken windows to houses and cars.
One mischief call
involved a female that had broken a window and damaged a door at a
residence on
Anne Heggtveit Drive after
getting into an argument with other residents of the condo. 31
year-old Melissa HEROUX of
London was arrested and charged with
mischief under $5000 and kept overnight until sober, she is to appear
in
Owen Sound criminal court on
the 23rd of
September 2010
Collingwood/The
Blue Mountains OPP Marine Unit was also busy
dealing with boaters in the area and checking for compliance with
regulations. One case involved three males that were observed in a
canoe in the Collingwood harbour. Investigation found that they had
personal flotation devices (PFD) but were not wearing them. On top of
this, the three males were non swimmers, had been drinking and police
seized a bucket full of beer. Needless to say charges were laid.
Almost 40 complaints were
received for noisy parties and pedestrians, renters causing issues at
local rental units and parking complaints where numerous cars were
towed. Almost 40 calls for service were generated for 911 calls made
in error as a result of the phone having a single button 911 dial
feature. Police remind those who own those types of phones to make
sure that the phone is locked when not in use. This will prevent the
phone buttons from being pushed accidentally.
On the 7th of
August around 4:00am police pulled over a vehicle after observing it
swerving in and out of its lane. It was found that the driver had
consumed alcohol and was subjected to a roadside test where he failed
and was arrested for having over 80mgs of alcohol in 100mls of blood
while operating a motor vehicle (over 80). The 17 year-old driver is
facing charges of over 80, unauthorized possession of a weapon (spring
loaded knife) and G2 driver with blood/alcohol concentration above
zero. He is to appear in youth criminal court in
Owen Sound on the 24th of
August 2010.
Police also were called to attend to found property on
Raglan Street
where two granite grave markers were located in a backyard. The grave
markers have the name of “Kloss” and “Krecko”. It is unknown when
those were stolen or from which cemetery and as such police are
looking for information as to the owners of those markers. Call
445-4321 if you know information on this matter or were the victim of
theft involving such items.
Police also arrested and charged three youths that were refusing to
leave the
Blue
Mountain
Resort at the request of security. Upon arresting them, police found
one youth in possession of marihuana and all three had been drinking.
The two 16 year-olds and one 17 year-old were charged for liquor
license act offences, trespass to property act offences and one was
charged with the possession of the drugs and all three spent the night
in the cells at the Collingwood detachment until sober.
Numerous officers were called in to deal with the visitors to the area
to patrol the
Heritage Drive
area and
Blue
Mountain
Resort. The increase in the amount of calls for service was expected
given the number of people visiting the area during the weekend.

Civic
Holiday
Long Weekend – Focus on Safety
(Collingwood/The Blue Mountains, ON) –
This Civic
Holiday Long Weekend the
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
will be working to help ensure that motorists and outdoor enthusiasts
have a safe holiday. Officers will continue to
focus on “the big three” causes of injuries on the roads waterways and
trails - aggressive driving, drinking and driving and improper use of
seatbelts, restraints and floatation devices.
Aggressive driving includes the offences of
speeding, following to closely and unsafe lane changes.
Off-road and waterway aggressive driving is defined as speeding
too fast for conditions and operating vessels and all-terrain vehicles
without due care and attention for other users.
These offences are the leading causes of serious crashes and
fatalities on
Ontario’s highways, waterways and
trails.
Drinking and driving offences continue to be the
leading criminal cause of death in
Ontario.
Throughout the province, R.I.D.E. programs will be set up to target
drivers who disrespect others by drinking and driving.
The proper use of seatbelts and child restraints will also be a
focus as the OPP continues to see preventable injuries and deaths
occurring in collisions where occupants are either not wearing
seatbelts or are using them improperly.
OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino reminds motorists
that collisions and injuries are preventable.
“Motorists and pleasure craft operators must drive according to
conditions and obey the laws. It is sad that
emergency services personnel continue to need to respond to these
tragedies where someone has needlessly lost their life and family
members have to deal with that loss just because basic common sense
was replaced by reckless behaviour”.
OPP Deputy Commissioner Larry Beechey, Provincial
Commander for Traffic Safety reminds everyone that incidents aren’t
limited to our highways but also occur on our waterways and trails.
“During the recent
Canada Day extra-Long
Weekend, 16 people lost their lives on
Ontario Highways, trails and
waterways. This is why we will be doubling our
efforts at enforcement to prevent fatalities this long weekend.
Take time to keep each other safe and set a safe example for
others. Drive carefully, wear your lifejackets and
seatbelts and ask others to do the same.”
STAY FOCUSED, STAT ALERT and STAY SAFE.

OPP seeking public’s help to locate a
missing person
(Collingwood,
ON.) The Collingwood and The
Blue Mountains detachment of the
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are
asking for the public’s help in locating a missing person last seen at
the baseball park on
Hume Street on Sunday night.
Missing is 51 year-old
Michael DUFFEY of Collingwood, he is described as a white male, 5’1”
to 5’3”, approximately 155lbs with balding grey hair. He was last seen
at the park on
Hume Street playing ball
hockey in Collingwood, he was riding a red coloured 12 speed mountain
bike which is missing from his residence on
Birch Street. A unique
descriptor for Mr. DUFFEY is that he has a large tattoo of
Yosemite Sam on his right shoulder.
Police are concerned
because according to people who know Mr. DUFFEY, this is completely
out of character for him to be missing and not contacting his friends
to advise as to where he is. Also of concern is the fact that Mr.
DUFFEY is slightly developmentally challenged.
If anyone has information
on the whereabouts of Mr. DUFFEY, please contact the Collingwood OPP
at 445-4321. No photos are available at this time and will forwarded
to media if obtained.

OPP Marine Unit on patrol this summer
(Collingwood/The Blue Mountains, ON.) The
Collingwood and The
Blue Mountains detachment of the
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
will have their Marine Unit patrolling local waterways this summer.
The unit has been
operational since June 30th and consists of two full time
officers and 7 part time officers operating out of Collingwood
detachment. Since the 30th of June, one person was charged
with impaired operation of a vessel, numerous boats were checked for
equipment violations and the unit is also involved in searches for
missing or overdue boaters and persons.
All boaters are reminded
that, since
September 15th
2009, they now require a pleasure craft operator card to
legally operate any boat or personal watercraft and they must have it
with them, much like a driver’s licence.
Officers will also be
checking boats for personal floatation devices (which have to be in
sufficient size and numbers for all persons onboard), and safety
equipment. A list of required equipment can be found in the Safe
Boating Guide available at local marinas and boat launches or at
www.boatingsafety.gc.ca . As well, there will be a zero
tolerance for alcohol consumption or behaviour endangering other
boaters.
Marine Unit Officer
Trevor McKean advises that “we encourage people to enjoy our waterways
but to do so in a safe manner with consideration for others. As always
water on the water, beer on the peer”
